Getting Ready for Spring

Yesterday, as I was outside talking with my husband Rod, while he was erecting our greenhouses, several flocks of Canadian geese flew over. As we are only 3 miles from Fort Cobb Lake, many geese stay in the area all winter. It caused Rod to remember a Disney movie he had seen years ago about stopping the wild geese on their southward migration. He couldn’t remember the name of the movie, so I Googled it, found out it was “Those Calloways”, and we watched it on Amazon last night. It struck a special cord with us as that family was struggling to make it on a farm in the wilderness. Their struggles to build a house and put their crops in were familiar to us, as when we bought this farm, it was only a raw 80 acre farm with a deep irrigation well and no pump. After two years, we have a packing shed and office built, and greenhouses are now going up. Our first growing season was about the worst, weather-wise, that it could have been, but we still managed to have quite alot of great veggies, and are hoping for a better season this year. We appreciate everyone that has purchased our vegetables this past year and are looking forward to serving you through our Veggie Clubs, farmers’ market and Oklahoma Food Co-op in 2012.

Sweet Potatoes are in!

We are busy digging Sweet Potatoes here on the farm, and we’ve got LOTS of them! They are the delicious Beauregard variety that originated in Louisiana. We will be bagging them in 5 lb. sacks to sell. If you or anyone you know would like good, chemical-free Sweet Potatoes, let us know. They would make a great holiday gift for family or friends. They can be picked up here on the farm, or we could arrange to deliver them to Oklahoma City or Lawton.

Fall Harvest Festival

This Saturday, October 22 is the Fall Harvest Festival at the Lawton’s Farmers’ Market. There will be neat craft booths, a Pumpkin Patch for the kids, food, music, and of course we’ll be there with our fresh yummy veggies. The weather is supposed to be in the 70′s, so why not come by and enjoy a lovely Fall day! It’s from 8 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. at the Comanche County Fairgrounds off Sheridan. We hope to see you there!

Bountiful Harvest

What a colorful time of year, and my favorite! All the yellows and oranges of the pumpkins & winter squash make everything feel festive and alive. Still lots of summer crops growing, plus looks like we’ll have more of those good Purple Hull Peas coming along shortly. So it’s the best of both seasons right now, and we want to enjoy it before the freezes come.

Veggie Club has started!

The fall Veggie Club is off and going! We had our first delivery yesterday, Wednesday, Sept. 28th. It was great to meet new friends in the Oklahoma City area. With the weather improved, so are our vegetables. The Bell peppers and Italian peppers are growing sooo much bigger now. Rod harvested new fall Watermelons, Swiss Chard and baby Summer Squash today. I couldn’t resist bringing some of those little beauties in for lunch, and I’m about to go sample one of those melons, too! The winter squashes are really coming in, also – Spaghetti Squash, the green Buttercup and darling 4-5 lb. Pumpkins! I can’t help but think of Autumn with those stacked in bushel baskets all around. Almost ready are Delicata squash and Butternut. FALL VEGGIE CLUB!

We’re planning to start a Fall Veggie Club in the Oklahoma City area this month that will run till the end of November. It looks like it will be an evening club, between 4:00-6:00 PM at a central location. The price will be $25 per box plus tax (once a week) with a $100 commitment deposit that will be reimbursed over the last 4 weeks. We only sell what we grow, and it’s all pesticide and herbicide free. If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in having beautiful fresh vegetables for the Fall, let us know.
